Sal Plateau

Sal Plateau lies to the south of Çamlıhemşin in Rize province, on the flanks of the Kaçkar Mountains at roughly 2,000-2,002 metres of elevation, and is almost always mentioned together with its neighbour, Pokut Plateau. Perched just above the tree line over the valleys carved by the Fırtına and Hala streams, the plateau owes its fame to its traditional highland houses built of spruce and chestnut timber and to its raised timber storehouses known as serender.

Preserved for generations by Hemşin families who climbed to the highlands each summer for animal husbandry, this wooden architecture, with its steeply pitched roofs, timber framing and elevated granaries, represents one of the most authentic expressions of Eastern Black Sea vernacular building; many of these structures have today been converted into boutique guesthouses. The real magic of the plateau is the sea of clouds that fills the valleys in the early morning and drifts between the peaks, a spectacle that turns Sal into a magnet for photographers and view-seekers. In guided itineraries Sal is usually grouped with Ayder, the stone arch bridges of the Fırtına Valley and central Çamlıhemşin. Notable nearby points include Pokut Plateau, the Gito and Samistal highlands, Zilkale castle and the Ottoman-Hemşin arch bridges over the Fırtına stream. Access & Best Time

Access is about 20 kilometres from Çamlıhemşin centre, with the final section being a narrow, winding and steep highland road; 4x4 vehicles or local minibus and off-road transfers are generally preferred. Parking is limited to the packed-earth areas around the guesthouses. Large tour coaches cannot reach the plateau because of the narrow, steep road, so group transfers are made from Çamlıhemşin or Ardeşen in small vehicles. Accessibility for disabled visitors is limited by the natural trail surface and the steep terrain. The best time to visit is the highland season from late May to September, when the roads are open and the meadows are green; the peak season is July and August, while the road is mostly closed by snow in winter. The recommended route is to climb early to Pokut to catch the sea of clouds, walk across the forest path to Sal, and on the way back add the Fırtına Valley bridges and Ayder to the programme.
