Hemşin Pokut-Sal Walking Route

The Pokut-Sal walking route is the classic day-hike of the Eastern Black Sea, running along the ridge between the Fırtına and Hala valleys in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, at roughly 2,030 metres above sea level.

Serander Architecture and the Highlands

The trail links three highland settlements set just above the tree line, Pokut, Sal and Hazindak, and along the way walkers come face to face with the region's best-preserved timber vernacular architecture: the serander, a stilted wooden storehouse-dwelling raised on legs and shielded from rodents. For centuries these seranders have sheltered Hemşin families through the summer transhumance; built on stone footings with hand-worked timber façades, many are now protected heritage structures repurposed as boutique guesthouses.

The Sea of Clouds and the Route's Appeal

The route's enduring appeal, however, lies in its natural spectacle. At dawn and at sunset a sea of clouds fills the valleys below, turning the wooden lodges into an island floating above the mist. This scene has made Pokut one of the most photographed highland viewpoints in Turkey. Agencies favour the route because it delivers a high visual payoff over a short distance: the walk from Pokut to Sal takes only 20-30 minutes, and the full classic loop can be completed in an easy 2-4 hour hike, making it accessible to serious trekkers and casual day-visitors alike. Average visit time is 3-4 hours without an overnight stay, or one night for those chasing both sunset and sunrise. On guided itineraries Pokut-Sal is usually paired with the Ayder plateau, the Fırtına Valley, Zilkale castle and the Şenyuva stone bridge, and most tours start from Şenyuva village.

Getting There and Access

Access is via a narrow, steep 15-20 km mountain road from Çamlıhemşin through Şenyuva; the final section is unpaved, so the ascent is made only in 4×4 vehicles or local jeep-minibus transfers. Standard tour coaches cannot reach the plateau, so groups transfer to jeeps in Çamlıhemşin or Şenyuva. There is no formal or paved car park; vehicles are left on flat ground beside the seranders. Wheelchair access is limited given the steep, path-based terrain and is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Best Time, Photography and Recommended Route

The best time to visit is June to October, when the pastures are open and green and the cloud-sea is most frequent; peak season is July and August. In winter, snow largely closes the road and lodging is scarce. The finest photo spots are the ridgeline of Sal and Pokut's valley-facing terrace. The recommended route is to take a jeep up from Şenyuva to Pokut, pause among the Pokut seranders, walk across to Sal, and watch the sunset from the Sal ridge.
