Palovit Waterfall

Palovit Waterfall is a spectacular natural monument in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, set within the boundaries of Kaçkar Mountains National Park in the upper reaches of the Fırtına Valley, where the Palovit Stream tumbles with heavy volume through dense forest. Falling from a height of about 15 metres, the water combines with moss-covered rocks, chestnut and spruce woodland and a constant rising mist to create one of the region's most impressive and highest-discharge waterfalls.

The waters of the Palovit Stream join the Fırtına River below, one of the wildest rivers of the Black Sea, so the fall is also a symbol of the valley's natural water regime.

History & Significance

Historically the waterfall lies along the paths that the Hemşin people have used for centuries on their way up to the high pastures, and together with the nearby Palovit Plateau it forms part of the traditional plateau culture. Beyond its natural beauty, its position on the same route as Zil Kale and the historic Fırtına stone bridges lends it an added cultural and historical context.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Its tourism value is high: entry is free, it is open all day, and camping and picnic areas line the approach road. Agencies particularly favour Palovit because it is one of the natural highlights of the classic Çamlıhemşin-Zil Kale-Çat day tour; being reachable on a short walk, offering a dramatic photo frame and charging no entry fee, it slots easily into the itinerary. The average visit lasts 30 to 45 minutes, rising to an hour with photography and a break. On guided tours it is usually scheduled after the visit to Zil Kale, in the late morning or early afternoon when light reaches the forest floor. Nearby highlights include Zil Kale, the Çat Valley and village, the Gelintülü (Tar) Waterfall, the Şenyuva (Çinçiva) arched stone bridge and the Palovit Plateau. The best photo spots are the wooden viewing platform opposite the falls and the edge of the lower pool; morning and overcast hours are ideal for the silky long-exposure water effect. Access is via the road from central Çamlıhemşin towards Zil Kale, then a narrow, cobbled road of about 4 kilometres branching left at a roadside fountain; the distance from the town centre is roughly 15 kilometres. Parking is the lot at the waterfall entrance. Because the road is narrow and winding, large coaches generally stay at Çamlıhemşin or Zil Kale and visitors transfer by minibus or 4x4. Accessibility for disabled visitors is limited, as the final stretch is a footpath over stony ground.

Route & Best Time

The best period is late spring to summer, with May and June at their most powerful thanks to snowmelt; the peak season is the summer months and holiday weekends, when the narrow roads become very crowded. The recommended route runs up the valley as Çamlıhemşin → Şenyuva bridge → Zil Kale → Palovit Waterfall → Çat Valley.
