CultureOn the southern edge of Diyarbakır, spanning the two banks of the Tigris, the Ten-Arched Bridge — officially the Dicle (Tigris) Bridge — is one of the city's most recognisable historic monuments.
History
According to the two-line ornamental Kufic inscription on its southern face, the bridge was commissioned in 1065 CE (457 AH), during the reign of the Marwanid ruler Nizam al-Dawla Nasr, by the judge Abu al-Hasan Abd al-Wahid and built by an architect named Ubayd. Most scholars, however, read this as a repair inscription and believe the structure's foundations reach back much further, to Roman-Byzantine times, making the bridge a layered emblem of the city's long history.
Architecture
It is built throughout of Diyarbakır's signature black basalt, with white limestone used here and there in the arch keystones and inscriptions. Between 172 and 178 metres long, it crosses the Tigris on ten pointed arches; the deck is 5.45-6.24 metres wide across the first five spans, widening to 9.69-10.20 metres beyond the fifth. With its pyramid-capped cutwaters on the upstream face and its flat deck, it counts among Anatolia's finest examples of the multi-span flat-decked bridge type.
Cultural and Touristic Significance
Its touristic value matches its cultural weight: the bridge sits at the heart of the UNESCO cultural landscape that descends from the walls to the Hevsel Gardens, and the view from Keçi (Goat) Bastion — the Tigris, Hevsel and the arches together — is the city's classic postcard image. Agencies favour the Ten-Arched Bridge as the closing stop of a full-day old-city tour, because it is both the natural end of the walking route and the most rewarding photo frame at sunset.
Visiting & Access
The average visit lasts 20-40 minutes, enough to walk the deck, shoot from the lower terrace and take a short break. Guided programmes usually reach it after the Great Mosque, Hasan Pasha Han, the churches loop and the İçkale citadel, pairing it with the Keçi Burcu panorama. Nearby lie the Hevsel Gardens, the Tigris valley viewpoints, the Gazi Pavilion and the Fiskaya (Anzele) Waterfall. The best photo spots are the southeastern bank, the lower terraces and the fields on the far side, where at golden hour and sunset the basalt arches mirror in the river. Access is easy: about 3 km south of the centre, a few minutes by road from the Mardin Gate, with a lower car park where tour coaches can pull in. Since a new bridge opened alongside it in 2009, most motor traffic has shifted to an alternative route, so walking the old bridge is safe. Accessibility is partial: the shore path and terrace are level, but the historic stone deck can be uneven. The best time to visit is spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October); in summer, with midday heat above 40°C, an early-morning or sunset visit is advised. Peak season falls in the spring months, weekends and public holidays.
