Faraşin Plateau, in the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak and stretching along the Şırnak-Hakkari border line at an elevation exceeding 2,600 metres, is one of the region's most spectacular high mountain meadows.
Natural Setting & Lakes
Also known locally as the "Plateau of Peace" (Huzur Yaylası), it has risen to national attention in recent years as a "new route for nature lovers", thanks to its cool air, endless green pastures, snow-fed tectonic lakes and untouched wilderness.
Its upper reaches hold glacial/tectonic bodies of water such as the Faraşin and Karadağ lakes, along with Çalyan (Karagöl) and other small lakes nearby; the shores of these lakes shelter numerous endemic plant species, making the area botanically rich.
Plateau Culture
In late spring and summer the meadows fill with colourful wildflowers, nomadic families move up with their herds, and an authentic transhumance culture comes alive; visitors encounter local delicacies such as plateau cheese, dairy products and honey.
Faraşin is also one of the rare areas where traditional nomadic (koçer) life still continues; visitors have the chance to observe tent culture, animal husbandry and plateau cuisine first-hand.
Visiting & Access
From the Beytüşşebap district centre the plateau is reached in about 1.5 hours by vehicle over mountain roads, with conditions depending on season and snow. Faraşin is ideal for nature walking, photography, camping and scenic viewing; its clear skies and absence of light pollution also make it good for stargazing.
However, since the plateau lies within a border belt, access can at times be restricted by security and weather; confirming current road and safety conditions with the Beytüşşebap District Governorate, gendarmerie and local guides before a visit is important. In winter heavy snow effectively closes access, so the plateau can only be visited within the summer-to-early-autumn window.
Setting out early in the morning for the ascent is advisable, both for road conditions and for the mist and rain that can develop in the afternoon.
Ecology & Significance
The plateau's name has become increasingly known in recent years through organised nature-walking events, photo tours and images shared on social media; this interest is seen as a concrete sign of the region's gradual opening to tourism after long years of security tension.
The surrounding tectonic lakes, snowmelt-fed streams and colourful alpine meadows form an ecologically sensitive ecosystem that must be protected; visitors are expected to take care not to leave litter or damage the natural fabric.
Faraşin is the finest representative of Şırnak's harsh yet mesmerising high-mountain nature and the leading attraction of the province's nature-tourism potential.
