Mount Kato (Katokerpi)

Mount Kato (Katokerpi), rising in the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak, is among the province's most striking natural beauties, with a high summit and dramatic views. Set within the mountainous belt between Uludere and Beytüşşebap, Kato offers terrain suited to mountaineering, trekking and camping - though it is demanding - with green slopes, sheer rocky peaks and deep valleys.

Nature and Scenery

At its foothills, the Zümrüt (Ilıcak) hot spring, with healing waters at 39°C, is a popular rest stop for local people and can be combined with a nature walk. In late spring and summer, Kato's flowering meadows, snow-fed streams and cool air make it a strong draw for nature photographers and adventure enthusiasts, with panoramas opening from the heights toward the Beytüşşebap valleys and the neighbouring Sat Mountains. In spring and summer the mountain's high meadows reveal rich alpine vegetation, endemic species and a diversity of butterflies, making Kato appealing for botanical and nature photography.

Safety and Visiting Conditions

That said, Mount Kato is a sensitive area on the border zone whose name has also featured in past security operations in the public eye, so unguided free access is not advised. A visit requires confirming the current security situation with the Beytüşşebap District Governorate and gendarmerie, engaging a local guide, and suitable seasonal conditions. In winter, heavy snow effectively closes access to the higher reaches. Access is via mountain roads from the Beytüşşebap district centre and requires an off-road vehicle. Although the Kato area was mentioned in the media for past security operations, it is being gradually reassessed for nature tourism amid the region's stability in recent years.

The Visitor Experience

Mount Kato is one of the symbols of Şırnak's untouched, rugged and authentic high-mountain nature; under proper permit and guiding conditions it forms - together with Faraşin Plateau - one of the most impressive stops on the province's nature-tourism route. The villages and nomadic communities at its foothills give visitors a chance to experience traditional plateau life and local dairy products. A Kato visit planned together with the Zümrüt hot spring makes for an integrated day offering both a nature walk and thermal rest. Visitors are advised to carry sufficient water, suitable footwear and clothing for sudden weather changes. For photography, camping and scenic viewing it is a niche but high-potential destination.
