Zigana Pass & Tunnel

Zigana Pass is a historic mountain gateway rising to 2,032 metres across the Pontic Mountains of the Eastern Black Sea, linking the port city of Trabzon with inland Gümüşhane. For centuries it was one of the most critical defiles on the Silk Road, carrying caravans from the Black Sea coast toward Erzurum, Kars, Tabriz and onward to Samarkand; European merchants prized this stretch so highly that they called it “the golden road to Samarkand.”

Traders, armies and pilgrim caravans all crossed this threshold, leaving a deep imprint on the commercial and cultural memory of the region.

Nature & Scenery

Geographically the pass is defined by steep slopes cloaked in dense spruce and fir forest, cloud-wrapped summits, and endemic cyclamen and lily species that bloom in spring. On summer mornings a sea of clouds fills the valleys below, offering one of the most sought-after vistas in the whole Black Sea region. Viewpoints at the crest and the hairpin bends of the old pass road frame both the green, Black Sea-facing slopes and the drier plateaus opening south toward Gümüşhane in a single sweep. Blanketed in snow for roughly five months of the year, the pass gains a seasonal draw from its modest ski facility and winter scenery.

Tunnel & Transport

The area's transport identity changed profoundly with the New Zigana Tunnel, opened on 3 May 2023. At 14,476 metres, this twin-tube tunnel is the longest road tunnel in Turkey and Europe and the third longest in the world; it cut the Trabzon-Gümüşhane journey by about 30 minutes and carried more than 1.77 million vehicles in its first year. By keeping the route open in all four seasons instead of the snowbound high pass, the tunnel has turned the old climb into a scenic, nature-focused detour.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Agencies rarely treat Zigana as a stand-alone destination; instead they program it as a strong scenic stop along the Trabzon-Gümüşhane transfer corridor, easily paired with the famous rice-pudding break at Hamsiköy and with Sümela Monastery tours in the Altındere Valley near Maçka. The average visit lasts 30 to 60 minutes for a viewpoint and photo stop, extending to half a day if skiing or a highland walk is added. Coaches can park on the wide shoulders of the old pass road and the flat clearings near the summit, though the tight bends demand experienced drivers for large vehicles. Visitors with limited mobility can enjoy the panorama from the vehicle or from level overlooks, but the sloping trails are not wheelchair-friendly. The best time to visit is June to September for the sea of clouds and greenery, and December to March for snow scenery and skiing; peak season falls in summer and during national holidays. A recommended route runs from central Trabzon through Maçka and Hamsiköy for the sütlaç break, then up to the old Zigana overlooks for photography, returning via the tunnel for a comfortable descent.
