Turuş Rock Tombs

The Turuş Rock Tombs form a large Roman-period necropolis on an entirely rocky hill about 40 km from Adıyaman along the Adıyaman-Şanlıurfa road, 1 km west of the village of Turuş (Kuyulu).

Necropolis and Tomb Architecture

Excavations and surveys carried out by the Adıyaman Museum have identified around 60 rock-cut tombs on the hill. These rock-cut chamber tombs, with their single- and multi-chambered plans of varying sizes, entrance façades, funerary couches (kline) and niches, constitute one of the densest examples of Roman burial tradition in the region. Sharing an architectural tradition with the Perre necropolis, Turuş is a silent witness to the ancient stonework that skilfully carved a city of the dead into the rock landscape. Together with Perre, the Turuş necropolis shows how widespread and developed the Roman-period rock-tomb tradition was in the Adıyaman area; the region's soft limestone allowed craftsmen to carve multi-chambered, façaded monumental tombs relatively easily. The kline (funerary couch) arrangement in the chambers reveals the spatial organisation of funeral rites and the cult of the dead.

Visitor Experience

The site is explored on foot among burial chambers scattered across the slopes of the rocky hill; inside, rock-cut funerary benches and architectural details can be seen. The visit requires careful movement on rocky ground rather than a flat, easy walk; in summer, hats and water are advised because of the shadeless hill. The site is largely open and freely accessible; guided commentary that reads the tomb types and the social structure of the period makes the visit meaningful.

Although not on the standard route of the classic Nemrut tour, Turuş is a valuable niche stop for enthusiasts of archaeology and rock architecture, for groups wishing to see the region's rock-tomb tradition in full alongside Perre, and for thematic tours running along the Adıyaman-Şanlıurfa axis. Its proximity to the city and the main road makes access easy. Thanks to its proximity to the city and the Şanlıurfa road, Turuş is a natural “second necropolis” stop complementing Perre for archaeology-minded groups and contributes to a fuller grasp of the region's tradition of death and commemoration.
