Taşbaşı Church & Cultural Center

Taşbaşı Church is one of Ordu's best-known historic buildings, rising in the Taşbaşı neighborhood of the central Altınordu district, within easy walking distance of the seafront promenade and the city core.

History & Architecture

Built in 1853 by the local Greek Orthodox community, the church is notable for its fine cut-stone masonry and stands as one of the most tangible witnesses to Ordu's multicultural Ottoman past. It follows a rectangular basilica plan oriented east-west; inside, two rows of three columns divide the main hall into three naves, with a large apse to the east flanked by two smaller apses. Every wall except the dome was raised in local cut stone, which has helped the structure survive largely intact.

Prison Years & Rebirth as a Cultural Center

The building's story reaches far beyond worship: having lost its congregation after 1915, it fell into disuse and then served as a prison for forty years, from 1937 to 1977, a period that left deep traces in local memory. First restored in 1983 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, it reopened on 10 April 2000 as the "Taşbaşı Cultural Center," hosting painting and photography exhibitions, concerts and cultural events; in recent years it has been undergoing conversion into an archaeology museum. The site is protected within Ordu's urban conservation zone.

The church can be visited free of charge Tuesday-Sunday, 09:00-17:00, and is suitable year-round, though the summer months that coincide with the beach and plateau seasons are the busiest. The recommended route is a morning promenade stroll followed by the central Taşbaşı-Paşaoğlu-museum circuit.
