NatureLimni Lake is a glacial mountain lake and nature park set at roughly 2,025 metres in the Zigana Mountains, within the boundaries of Zigana village in the Torul district of Gümüşhane.
Nature & History
Its dark, mirror-still waters are ringed by dense spruce, Scots pine, fir and juniper forest, and botanical surveys have recorded more than two hundred plant species around its shores. The lake has served as a public recreation ground since 1999 and was formally designated a Nature Park by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 2011; the protected area of about 72 hectares brings forest, lake, meadow and rock ecosystems together in a single compact basin. Historically the site sits beside the ancient Silk Road corridor that descended through the Zigana pass toward the port of Trabzon, which makes the lake not only a scenic stop but part of the transport and cultural memory of the Eastern Black Sea.
Natural Features & Wildlife
Its defining natural features are the wooden and stabilised walking paths that encircle the entire shoreline, the cathedral-like screen of spruce that rises straight from the water, and the reflected silhouette of the mountains; squirrels, foxes, wild hares and many bird species enrich the local wildlife. The park's tourist value is considerable: it lies about 44 km from Gümüşhane city centre, 16-20 km from Torul and only 5.5 km from Zigana village, and it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Visiting, Access & Tips
Agencies favour it because it dovetails naturally with the Zigana pass on the land leg of Trabzon-based Eastern Black Sea tours, offers parking and bungalow infrastructure, and photographs beautifully in every season. The average visit lasts one to two hours; on guided programmes it is usually combined the same day with the Zigana Tunnel and the Torul Castle Glass Terrace as a half-day nature break. Nearby highlights include the Zigana Ski Centre, Zigana Plateau, Torul Castle, Karaca Cave and the Santa Ruins. The strongest photographs are captured at the reflection point on the northern shore and from the panoramic ridge path looking down over the forest. Access is via a stabilised road through Zigana village; an organised car park at the park entrance accommodates tour coaches, while the entrance area is partly level for visitors with disabilities, though the mountain trails are not fully accessible. The best time to visit is the green plateau season from June to September, or December to March for snow scenery; the peak season is summer and the national holiday periods. Recommended route: Zigana Tunnel → Limni Lake walking loop → Torul Glass Terrace → Gümüşhane centre pestil-köme bazaar.

Visit & Logistics- Getting thereAbout 44 km from Gümüşhane centre, 16-20 km from Torul district, 5.5 km from Zigana village. The lake is reached from the Trabzon-Gümüşhane D885 highway via the Zigana village turnoff and then a stabilised road. The new Zigana Tunnel has made access to the area easier. As public transport is limited, most visitors arrive by private vehicle or tour coach.
