Kozan Castle (Sis)

Kozan Castle, historically known as Sis, crowns a steep rocky ridge roughly 400 metres above the town it dominates, forming the most imposing medieval fortress of the Cilician plain (Çukurova).

History

Layered over Assyrian, Roman and Byzantine foundations, it reached its monumental form under the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. The stronghold was captured in 1113 by Toros I, ruler of Cilician Armenia, and when the royal capital was transferred here from Anavarza sometime between 1180 and 1190, Sis became the kingdom's capital.

The Mamluk siege of 1375 destroyed the royal palace and ended the castle's political role, yet much of the curtain wall survives intact today.

Architecture & Features

Its circuit walls, if laid end to end, would stretch almost 3 kilometres, making it one of the largest fortified sites in the Levant. Architecturally, the castle is remarkable for its two distinct sections enclosed within a single outer rampart and for the 44 towers ranged along its fortifications.

Inside stand the ruins of two Armenian chapels, both probably from the 13th century, alongside rock-cut passages, deep water cisterns and storage vaults that allowed the garrison to withstand long sieges.

Visiting & Access

For tour operators, Kozan Castle is a favoured stop on the eastern Adana route: it pairs naturally with the ancient cities of Anavarza and Misis in a single day, is reachable by coach, and charges no entrance fee, while rewarding visitors with sweeping views over the Çukurova. The average visit lasts 60 to 90 minutes. On guided itineraries it usually follows a morning at Misis and an afternoon at Anavarza, with the castle saved for late-day golden-hour photography. Nearby points of interest include the Arıkan Mansion, the historic Kozan houses, the 1489 Hoşkadem (Great) Mosque, and Anavarza some 36 km away.

The finest photo spots are the viewing terraces atop the towers looking out over the town and plain, and the outer line of the ramparts. Access is about 80 km from Adana, with a 1.5 km asphalt road climbing to the base of the castle, where there is a parking area able to accommodate tour coaches and a café with panoramic views. Disabled access is limited by the steep, stony ground and stairs; visitors with restricted mobility can still enjoy the panorama from the lower terrace and café. The best seasons to visit are spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November); summer is demanding outside early mornings because of the Çukurova heat. Peak times are spring weekends and domestic holiday periods. Recommended route: park at the base, walk up the asphalt road, tour the outer walls and towers, explore the cisterns and chapel ruins, then pause for the panorama on the viewing terrace.
