NatureHalfeti is an ancient Euphrates-side town in the northwest of Şanlıurfa province whose roots reach back to the 9th century BCE and the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III.
The Sunken City and History
Having hosted Hittite, Persian, Macedonian, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic civilizations in turn, the settlement owes much of its present fame to a dramatic modern event: the Birecik Dam, completed in 2000 and filled by 2001, left roughly 40 percent of the old town submerged beneath the rising Euphrates. Part of the population was relocated to Karaotlak (New Halfeti), and what remained is a melancholy yet mesmerising "sunken city" of minarets rising from the water, half-drowned stone houses and flooded pistachio orchards. This surreal scene has made Halfeti the most photogenic stop in southeastern Anatolia. Its most iconic image is the sunken mosque minaret standing alone amid the water at neighbouring SavaÅŸan village, where boat tours slow at its base for a tea break and photographs.
Slow City and the Black Rose
In 2013 Halfeti joined the Cittaslow ("slow city") network, celebrated for its unhurried rhythm and preserved local fabric. Another legendary emblem is the "black rose" (kara gül), said to bloom a deep maroon-black only in the town's particular soil and microclimate; it is displayed in local gardens and draws visitors in spring.

Agencies favour Halfeti for a clear reason: a single boat tour bundles the sunken minaret, the ruins of the old town, Christian heritage such as St Nerses Church and the Barşavma Monastery, and the climactic Rumkale fortress-monastery. This roughly 90-minute cruise on the Euphrates delivers an unexpected experience of water and cool air amid an otherwise arid steppe. The average visit runs 2-3 hours with the boat tour, or a half day including lunch. Visit & Logistics- Getting thereAbout 112-120 km from central Şanlıurfa (1.5-2 hours by car); about 100 km from Gaziantep, and most tours combine it with Gaziantep-Zeugma. Reached via the D875 highway and local roads; public transport is limited, so a tour coach or private vehicle is preferred. From the town center, visitors descend to the Euphrates pier for the boat tour.

- Coach accessTour coaches can reach the pier / boat-departure car park; passengers then walk to board the boats. Large coaches cannot enter the narrow old-town lanes, so drop-off and pick-up take place at the pier square.
