Hakkari Meydan Madrasa

Meydan Madrasa, built on a flat plateau east of the Kale Altı Cemetery in the Biçer neighborhood of central Hakkari, is the province's most important historic and cultural structure.

History and Architecture

According to the inscription over its entrance, the madrasa was commissioned in 1700-1701 by İbrahim Bey, son of İzzeddin, and represents a fine early-18th-century example of the courtyard-madrasa plan that began in the Seljuk era and developed under the Beyliks and Ottomans. The building, with exterior dimensions of about 18.25 x 23.40 meters, belongs to the group of transverse-rectangular, courtyard, two-story, two-wing, flat-roofed madrasas. With its cut-stone workmanship, courtyard, porticoes and student cells, it carries the educational and architectural tradition of its age to the present; historically it was one of the centers of Hakkari's religious and scholarly life.

Museum and Collection

Restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1984, the building today serves as the Private Hakkâri City Archive and Ethnography Museum, presenting collections of the region's handicrafts, dress, daily life and history. As visitors walk through the madrasa's cool stone rooms they can trace the 18th-century Ottoman-Kurdish scholarly tradition, and the ethnographic exhibits include traditional dress, weaving looms, copper kitchenware, weapons and everyday objects. Meydan Madrasa also serves as a memory space narrating Hakkari's multicultural past, in which peoples and faiths lived side by side, presenting the region as a land of deep-rooted civilization rather than nature alone.

Visiting and Access

In this respect Meydan Madrasa is both a historic monument and an ideal museum stop for visitors wishing to understand Hakkari's culture. Standing in the city center within the same historic core as Hakkari Castle, it is easily toured together with the castle and Zab Valley view on central tours; it is reachable on foot and tour buses can approach the center. Meydan Madrasa is the indispensable historic anchor of central programs, adding cultural depth to Hakkari's mountain- and glacier-focused nature tours. The courtyard offers a peaceful space for photography and rest. Admission is usually free or a symbolic fee, and as the visit is short it is easily added to central tours. The ideal visiting period is spring through autumn, when the province is generally accessible.
