Gergeti Trinity Church (Georgian: Gergetis Tsminda Sameba) is a 14th-century sanctuary standing alone at roughly 2,170 metres on the right bank of the Chkheri River, directly above the town of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi) in the heart of the Greater Caucasus. When the glacier-crowned, cone-shaped summit of Mount Kazbek — one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus at over five thousand metres — rises behind it, the resulting scene is the single most photographed view in Georgia and the image that represents the country worldwide.
Architecture & History
The church is the only cross-cupola church in the historic province of Khevi; its dark-grey ashlar body, the carved ornament framing its doors and windows, and its separate bell tower from the same period make it a restrained yet commanding example of medieval Georgian architecture. According to the 18th-century chronicler Vakhushti, in times of danger precious relics from Mtskheta — even the grapevine cross of Saint Nino — were brought here for safekeeping, giving the building a spiritual depth beyond its scenery. Today it functions as an active monastery of the Georgian Orthodox Church; visitors are asked to cover shoulders and knees, and women to cover their heads.

The climb from Stepantsminda's square to the church is via a steep mountain track: about 20-30 minutes by 4x4 (Delica) transfer or a 1.5-2 hour steep walk. Once the Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel is completed (phased opening from 2026), the winter-closure-prone Gudauri-Kobi stretch will be bypassed, notably shortening the Tbilisi-Stepantsminda journey.
- ParkingThere is no large car park right at the church; 4x4 vehicles drop visitors on a small flat area near the monastery entrance. Those arriving by private car park in the open areas around Stepantsminda's square and continue up by 4x4 transfer or on foot.
