Gerger Castle

Adıyaman GAP
Popularity 36/100 Category Historic Structures

Gerger Castle stands on a steep rock mass overlooking the Euphrates (today the Atatürk Reservoir), a fortress of the Commagene and later periods.

Architecture and History

With its rock-cut steps, cisterns and inscriptions, it was one of the defensive structures controlling the region's strategic river crossings. The Commagene-era inscriptions and niches on the castle show it was part of the same royal network as Nemrut and Arsameia.

Scenery and Significance

The dramatic river-rock scenery around it makes the castle a valuable niche stop for nature and history enthusiasts.
