Çıtlıoğlu Mansion

Çıtlıoğlu Mansion is one of the monumental late-Ottoman timber-and-masonry houses standing in the centre of Şebinkarahisar, a district of Giresun in Turkey's Eastern Black Sea.

History & Significance

Founded at the historic crossroads where the Black Sea meets Central Anatolia, Şebinkarahisar was a lively centre of trade, mining and craftsmanship throughout the nineteenth century; the district's 133 registered immovable cultural assets and the roughly twenty-five restored houses of the Tamzara neighbourhood still carry the imprint of that era of prosperity. As part of this historic fabric, Çıtlıoğlu Mansion bears the name of a wealthy local family and is a commanding, multi-storey structure built on a stone foundation with a timber frame and adobe infill, its projecting bay windows dominating the street.

Architecture & Conservation

Thick stone walls, carved wooden ceilings, a spacious central-hall (sofa) plan, timber door and window joinery and the region's masterful stonework are the mansion's distinguishing features, all typical of the area's traditional civil architecture. The house is included in the comprehensive conservation drive launched by Şebinkarahisar Municipality in recent years; over 2024-2025, architectural-restoration students from Necmettin Erbakan University and Giresun University prepared measured-survey, restitution and restoration projects for nine historic mansions in the district, so that these buildings can be carried into the future with cultural and museum functions.

Visiting, Access & Tips

The mansion's touristic value emerges together with its surroundings rather than in isolation: Çıtlıoğlu Mansion forms a compact walking circuit with Şebinkarahisar Castle, the historic Tamzara neighbourhood, the Taşhan caravanserai and the Behramşah Mosque. This is precisely why agencies favour the site; within a short distance the castle-street-mansion trio lets visitors experience the authentic Black Sea-Anatolian urban texture without fatigue, offering a rich scene for photography. Touring the mansion inside and out takes about 30-45 minutes, while the whole town centre fits comfortably into a half-day programme. On guided tours the mansion is usually presented after the castle panorama, alongside the Tamzara streetscape. The best photo angles are the bay-windowed façade, the view down a narrow stone lane, and the town silhouette seen from the castle. Access is roughly 110 kilometres from the Giresun coast via a tunnelled mountain road, taking about 2-2.5 hours; parking is at the town square, and while tour coaches can reach the centre, the narrow lanes require walking. Because it is a multi-storey historic timber building with stairs, disabled access is limited.

Route & Best Time

The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May-October) when the mountain roads are open; peak season falls in July-August and the highland-festival period, while winter snow makes access difficult. The recommended route runs Castle, Tamzara neighbourhood, Çıtlıoğlu Mansion, Taşhan and Behramşah Mosque in turn.
