Heaven and Hell Valley

Heaven and Hell Valley stretches at around 3,500 meters in the high reaches of the Cilo Mountains, between Hakkari city center and the district of Yüksekova, and is a striking valley of contrasts.

Where Heaven Meets Hell

It takes its name from two utterly different neighboring landscapes: in the part called 'Heaven,' spring and summer clothe the slopes in colorful alpine flowers, lush meadows and spring water sources; while the adjacent 'Hell' section displays nature's harsh face with centuries-old glaciers, sheer rock walls and snowfields that persist most of the year. The meeting of these two extremes in a single frame makes the valley a rare photography and hiking spot in Turkey.

Nature and Wildlife

Lying at the heart of Cilo-Sat National Park, it holds rich alpine flora and fauna, and wild goats, mountain birds and endemic plants can be seen here. Around the valley lie plateaus such as Mergan (Merzan), where transhumance life continues, and tour programs often combine the valley crossing with a plateau visit.

Access and Visiting Conditions

Access is by 4x4 from Hakkari center to certain points, followed by moderate hiking, and weather can change rapidly at altitude. As a border zone, visits require governorate permits, experienced local guides and verified security information. The ideal period is July-August, when the snow has retreated, the flowers bloom and the glaciers are still visible.
