Bolaman Castle & Haznedaroğlu Mansion

Bolaman Castle and the Haznedaroğlu (Hazinedaroğlu) Mansion perched upon it rise on a small headland jutting into the Black Sea, about six kilometres west of the centre of Fatsa in Ordu province, within the Bolaman quarter.

History: From Castle to Mansion

The castle's foundations reach back to the Byzantine period, with some assessments attributing the lower masonry to Genoese builders; constructed of cut stone with an inner and outer ward, it once served as a watchtower and coastal garrison guarding this stretch of shoreline. A small basilica-plan chapel that survives within the inner fortress still makes the site's layered past legible. Atop these stone remains, in the early nineteenth century, Süleyman Paşa of the powerful Hazinedârzâde family, who served as governor of Trabzon, had a wooden mansion built; it first functioned as a guesthouse and later as the family's selamlık, or reception quarters. After family members such as Ali Bey and Ahmed Bey, the house became associated with Şerefnur Kademoğlu, which is why it is also known as the Kademoğlu Mansion.

Architecture and Silhouette

Built entirely of timber, with a rectangular plan, twin bay windows, painted sea-view panels in its salon and rich wood carving, it is regarded as one of the finest examples of late Ottoman-Turkish domestic architecture in the region. Its position directly above the waterline, on a fortress the waves lap against, gives the mansion an unforgettable silhouette; this dramatic setting is the chief reason agencies treat it as an essential stop on Black Sea coastal tours running the Fatsa-Perşembe corridor. Its photogenic character, short but memorable visit, and direct access from the shore road make it ideal for group itineraries.

Visit Duration and Nearby Stops

The average visit lasts 30-45 minutes and it is usually programmed as a brief scenic and photo stop on the Fatsa-Bolaman-Perşembe route. Ordu Metropolitan Municipality is restoring the mansion to convert it into a city museum, and once complete an interior tour will be added to programmes. Nearby, Bolaman beach, Yalıköy, the Perşembe highlands and Çaka (Hoynat) Island can easily be combined in a single day. The most striking photographs are taken from the shore road, framing the castle against the sea, and at sunset.

The best time to visit is May to October when skies are clear and the sea is calm; the peak season is July and August.
