Bodbe Monastery & St Nino's Tomb

Bodbe Monastery stands about 2 kilometres south of the town of Sighnaghi, cradled against a steep hillside in Kakheti, and ranks among the most important pilgrimage sites of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

History & Architecture

At its heart lies the tomb of St Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist who brought Christianity to Georgia. According to Georgian tradition, having witnessed the conversion of her people, Nino withdrew to the Bodbe gorge and died there around AD 338-340; at the behest of King Mirian III a small church was raised over her grave. The present main structure is a three-nave basilica with three protruding apses, dating in origin to the 9th-11th centuries and heavily remodelled over the centuries, particularly in the 17th. Pillaged by the armies of Shah Abbas I in 1615, the monastery was restored by King Teimuraz I of Kakheti, who established a theological school and a repository of manuscripts here. Closed under Soviet rule in 1924, it reopened as a convent in 1991. Architecturally its most striking element is the free-standing three-storey bell tower added between 1862 and 1885. Nino's tomb, partly silver-covered and set with a bejewelled turquoise halo, rests in a small chapel in the southeast corner of the cathedral.

The natural setting is as memorable as the architecture: the complex rises within a garden of tall cypress trees and commands a sweeping view over the Alazani Valley toward the Greater Caucasus mountains on the horizon. About 3 kilometres downhill lie the Spring of St Nino, believed to hold healing power, and a baptismal chapel built in the 1990s where pilgrims descend to bathe.

Visiting, Access & Tips

For Turkish agencies, Bodbe is the natural anchor of the Kakheti wine-and-faith arm of Black Sea-Georgia tours that enter at the Sarp border and reach inland via Batumi. Its proximity to Sighnaghi, the walled "City of Love", makes it easy to combine both in a single half day. On a typical guided programme the visit lasts roughly 45 to 75 minutes for the cathedral, bell tower, cypress garden and viewing terrace, with an extra hour reserved for those who descend to the spring. The best photo spots are the symmetrical cypress-lined path, the courtyard where the bell tower frames the cathedral, and the terrace overlooking the Alazani Valley, where early-morning light spreads a soft mist across the plain. Access is simple: a 5-10 minute drive from Sighnaghi brings you to the gate, where a car park and organised area accommodate tour coaches, though the final cypress path is gently sloped. Coach access is suitable for large vehicles. Disabled access is limited: the sloping ground, steps and stone paving are challenging for wheelchair users, so an assistant is advised. Entry is generally free, and women are expected to cover their heads and wear shoulder- and knee-covering clothing. The best time to visit is late spring and early autumn (May-June and September-October), when the Alazani Valley is lush or dressed in harvest colours and the air stays cool. Peak season is July-August, when Turkish tourist density and pilgrimage traffic reach their height. The recommended route is to begin at Bodbe Monastery in the morning, move to the Sighnaghi walls and wine cellars by midday, and spend the afternoon among the Kakheti vineyards toward Telavi.
