Batman Museum

Batman Museum, officially the Mehmet Cabir Alper Archaeology Museum, opened to visitors on 18 May 2015 inside the Cultural Centre building in central Batman.

History and Founding Purpose

Construction began in 2010, and the resulting two-storey, roughly 1,500-square-metre facility is one of the youngest yet most content-rich museums in south-eastern Anatolia. Its founding purpose is anything but ordinary: it exists to safeguard the finds recovered during rescue excavations at mounds across Batman and Siirt provinces that the Ilisu Dam on the Tigris would ultimately submerge. In this sense the museum serves as the living memory of the vanished heritage of Hasankeyf and its surroundings.

Collection and Highlights

The collection is arranged across three exhibition halls: the Paleolithic-Neolithic Hall, the Ilisu Hall, and the Hasankeyf Hall. Together they present around 500 artefacts in a chronological sweep from the Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages, including stone tools, pottery, ornaments, metal finds and grave goods that narrate tens of thousands of years of regional settlement. The museum's most celebrated object is the set of thirty-nine coloured gaming pieces unearthed at Basur Hoyuk, regarded as among the world's oldest known figurative game sets, dated to 3100-2900 BC in the Early Bronze Age. A standing stone from Gusir Hoyuk and a 'God Bes' figure from Hasankeyf are further highlights. The building also houses a documentary screening room, an archaeology library and a restoration laboratory.

Muzepark and the Visitor Experience

The adjoining open-air Muzepark, with reconstructed mound-house models, burial traditions and medieval Hasankeyf scenes, plus hands-on excavation areas where students dig under expert guidance, makes an enjoyable complement for families. Agencies favour Batman Museum for practical reasons: admission is free, it sits in the city centre, it is air-conditioned and sheltered from rain, and it works as an excellent context stop that condenses the whole regional story into half an hour before or after the Hasankeyf excursion. Seeing the artefacts of the drowned ancient town here makes the subsequent walk among the relocated monuments far more meaningful. The average visit lasts between 45 minutes and one hour.

Visiting & Access

On guided GAP tours the museum is usually positioned as the day's first stop, after which the itinerary continues to the New Hasankeyf Cultural Park, the castle and a Tigris boat trip. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons; in summer the cool halls offer welcome relief from the midday heat.
