Ananuri Fortress (Military Highway)

Ananuri Fortress is a walled castle-and-church ensemble on the Georgian Military Highway, about 66 kilometres north of Tbilisi, rising on the left bank of the Aragvi River valley.

History & Significance

From the 13th century onward it served as the seat and final refuge of the powerful Eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, the feudal dynasty that ruled this valley; the walls, towers and churches visible today belong largely to the 16th and 17th centuries. Commanding the main road descending from the Daryal Gorge and Russia, this stronghold was a strategic lock on the route to the Caucasus for centuries. In 1739, during a siege by the rival Duke Shanshe of Ksani, the fortress was set ablaze and the Aragvi clan was massacred; the last point of resistance was the great square tower known as Sheupovari, or the Unassailable, in the upper fortification.

Architecture & Structures

The complex comprises two joined castles: the upper fort with its steep defensive tower, and the lower fort enclosed by crenellated curtain walls that embrace two churches. The smaller Church of the Virgin dates to the early 1600s, while the grander, central-domed Church of the Mother of God (Assumption), with its richly carved stone façades, was completed in 1689 and holds the graves of several Aragvi dukes. The ensemble has been on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list since 2007.

Route & Itinerary

What makes Ananuri indispensable for tour operators is the turquoise water of the Zhinvali (Jinvali) Reservoir that laps against the walls: fortress, domed churches and green ridges combine in a single frame to create one of Georgia's most photographed scenes. On Black Sea–Georgia tours that enter via the Sarp border crossing, Ananuri is the first major stop on the Military Highway branch running from Tbilisi toward Kazbegi; offering both history and scenery, easy coach access and free entry, it is a fixture of every itinerary. The average visit lasts 30–45 minutes: the guide gives a short history, visitors climb the walls to view the lake, tour the church interiors and pause for photos.

Visiting, Access & Tips

Nearby lie the Zhinvali lake viewpoints, Gudauri ski resort and the Kazbegi–Gergeti Trinity Church to the north, and Mtskheta's UNESCO-listed Svetitskhoveli and Jvari to the south. The best photograph is taken from the upper terrace overlooking the lake or from the pull-off on the opposite slope. The finest time to visit is May–June, when the reservoir is fullest and most turquoise, and the mild autumn; peak season is July–August, while snow scenery runs from December to March.
