Ortamahalle sits on a sea-facing slope in Akçaabat, a district just west of Trabzon, and is one of the best-preserved traditional neighbourhoods on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast.

History & Significance

Carrying traces of Roman and Byzantine settlement, the quarter took its enduring character in the Ottoman period, and in 1988 much of it was declared an urban conservation area. Today the neighbourhood holds more than sixty registered historic structures, including mansions, fountains, schools, mosques and museums.

Architecture & Mansions

Its defining feature is its konaks, outstanding examples of Ottoman civil architecture: stone lower floors carry timber-framed upper storeys with projecting bay windows and tiled roofs, linked by narrow cobblestone lanes that frame glimpses of the Black Sea between the eaves. The quarter's landmark is the early-twentieth-century Timurcioğlu (Timurciler) Mansion, bought by the municipality in 2010 and, after restoration, reopened in 2013 as a museum and café-restaurant. The Kanoğlu and Mehmet Efendi Mansions have been adapted into dining venues and boutique accommodation. Another key stop is the Ortamahalle Museum, housed in the Byzantine-era Church of Saint Michael, which retains fragments of its historic interior. Staged restoration continues under a partnership between Akçaabat Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; a third phase will renew around twenty more houses in the upper part of the neighbourhood to their original standards.

Culture, Gastronomy & Visiting

Ortamahalle is also the home of the celebrated Akçaabat köfte (grilled meatball), so it pairs heritage with gastronomy, making it a natural stop for agencies on the Trabzon-Uzungöl-Sümela route. Having welcomed roughly 180,000 visitors in 2024 and close to 200,000 in 2025, it is among the most-visited spots for travellers to the city. The average visit lasts about ninety minutes to two hours, enough to tour the mansion museum, wander the lanes and pause for meatballs and tea on a sea-view terrace. The best photo points are the upper streets lined with bay-windowed mansions and the terraces that frame the harbour together with the old houses.

Getting thereAbout 13 km from central Trabzon; dolmuş and municipal buses from the Trabzon bus station/coastal road to the district centre of Akçaabat, then a short walk from the coast to the quarter. Trabzon Airport is about 20-25 km away, 30-40 minutes by taxi/transfer. Easy access by private car via the coastal (D010) road.
ParkingMunicipal parking lots and roadside parking are available in the district centre and along the coast; since vehicle access into the quarter's narrow, cobblestone streets is limited, cars are left in the coastal/square car parks below and visitors walk up.
Coach accessTour coaches can drop off and pick up around the coastal road and district square; large buses cannot enter the quarter's steep, narrow streets, so groups walk up from the square (short but uphill).
AccessibilityLimited. Steep slopes, cobblestone paving and stepped streets are challenging for wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility; the coastal strip and some cafés-restaurants in the lower section are more accessible, while the upper quarter is difficult to reach.
